Moab, Utah borders two of the nation’s most spectacular national parks – Canyonlands and Arches. Naturally, the local Moab Music Festival takes advantage of the incredible landscape and moves performances directly into the gorgeous red-rock country. The signature event of this festival is a concert series that unites classical chamber music and the beauty of nature – the series actually takes place inside a grotto carved by the Colorado River. Concert goers climb into boats, tour the river and find themselves inside the magical space where chamber music fills what critics call God’s version of Carnegie Hall. James Martin
Bass-Baritone James C. Martin has won critical acclaim for his performances in opera, musical theater, and concert as a versatile singer, actor, and entertainer. Always an audience favorite, his artistic repertoire spans from Bach to be-bop, Busoni to Burleigh, and Berg to Bernstein. He has appeared with leading musical organizations throughout the United States and abroad, including the opera companies of Mississippi, Chicago, San Francisco, Santa Fe, St. Louis, New York, Toronto, Strasbourg, Basel, and Oslo; the music festivals of Marlboro, Ravinia, Aspen, Moab, Colmar, and Tel Aviv; and concert appearances at the Concertgebouw, the Library of Congress, Washington National Cathedral, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center, Bruno Walter Auditorium.

Michael Barrett
Known as a champion of new music and innovative programming, Mr. Barrett has created numerous concerts and events that have attracted enthusiastic audiences. In addition to serving as the Music Director of the Moab Music Festival, which he co-founded in 1992, Mr. Barrett serves as the Chief Executive and General Director of the Carmoor Music Festival in Westchester County, New York. From 1994 to 1997, he was the Director of the Tisch Center for the Arts at the 92nd Street Y in New York, where, among other things, he created the widely-acclaimed Today’s Composers series. In 1988, he co-founded with Steven Blier the New York Festival of Song (NYFOS), which presents a diversity of thematic song recitals in New York City and beyond. Mr. Barrett also serves as the Artistic Advisor for the Estate of Leonard Bernstein. A protégé of Bernstein, Barrett began his long association with the renowned conductor and composer as a student in 1982. From 1985 to 1990, he served as an assistant conductor to the Maestro. Mr. Barrett has been a guest conductor with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France among others.

Eric Zivian
Eric Zivian was born in Michigan and grew up in Toronto, Canada, where he attended the Royal Conservatory of Music. After receiving a diploma there, he left home at age fifteen to attend the Curtis Institute of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree. He went on to receive graduate degrees from the Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music. He studied piano with Gary Graffman and Peter Serkin and composition with Ned Rorem, Jacob Druckman, and Martin Bresnick. He attended the Tanglewood Music Center both as a performer and as a composer. Mr. Zivian has given solo recitals in Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, and the San Francisco Bay Area. He has played concertos with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the Portland Baroque orchestra.

Ian Swenson
A native of New York, violinist Ian Swensen came from a musically gifted family of Norwegian and Japanese-Hawaiian descent. He studied at The Juilliard School with Dorothy DeLay and the Eastman School of Music with Donald Weilerstein. He has lived in the Bay Area for nearly 20 years, teaching at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Sacramento State University. He is a passionate pedagogue, and his students have gone on to major positions in orchestras and teaching institutions around the world. Swensen also maintains an active schedule as soloist and chamber musician, appearing at [email protected], with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society and other venues. He has performed with members of the Juilliard, Cleveland, Emerson, Takács, Concord and Tokyo quartets, as well as Menahem Pressler, Gilbert Kalish, Mark O’Connor and Yo-Yo Ma.

Tanya Tomkins
Tanya Tomkins, a virtuoso on both the Baroque and modern cello, is equally at home playing a Bach cello suite in an intimate house concert or anchoring the cello section as principal cellist of the internationally renowned Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra on concert stages around the world. Tomkins studied in the Netherlands with renowned cellist and early music specialist Anner Bylsma. She received her Soloist Diploma from The Royal Conservatory of Music at The Hague. In 2001 Tomkins won the Erwin Bodky Competition for early music soloists in Boston; she was the first cellist to be awarded the prize. As a performer of Baroque music, Tomkins serves as co-principal cellist of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the Portland Baroque Orchestra. She has been featured as soloist with Philharmonia Baroque, American Bach Soloists, the Oregon Bach Festival, the Mozart Festival in San Luis Obispo, California, the Berkeley Early Music Festival and the Boston Early Music Festival.

Leslie Tomkins
Leslie Tomkins, viola, is the co-founder and Artistic Director of the Moab Music Festival in Moab, Utah. She appears frequently as a guest artist with chamber ensembles such as New York Festival of Song,Trio Solisti, Music from Copland House, New York Philomusica, and the Turtle Island Quartet. She plays regularly with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Sacred Music in a Sacred Space,Westchester Philharmonic, Brooklyn Philharmonic among others. 2009 included appearances at the OK Mozart, Caramoor, ArtsAhisma and Moab Music Festivals. She holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory and the Mannes College of Music where she studied with Karen Tuttle.

LP How
Since 1980, violinist Liang-Ping How has been a member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra touring extensively throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, and appearing frequently as soloist and concertmaster of the conductor-less group. An active soloist and chamber music musician, How’s performances include the Caramoor, Spoleto, Lochenhaus and Moab Music Festivals, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, New York Philomusica at the International Music Festival of Sophia, and as guest soloist for the New Mexico Symphony. In addition he has served as the concertmaster for the Sarasota Opera since 2005 and is regularly engaged as concertmaster to the Monterey Symphony.

Arnaud Sussmann
Awarded a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2009, violinist Arnaud Sussmann is quickly establishing a reputation as a multi-faceted and compelling artist, earning the highest praise from both critics and audiences alike. Arnaud has performed as a soloist throughout the United States, Central America, Europe, and Asia, and at many renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Smithsonian Museum and the Louvre Museum. He has recently appeared with the New York Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra, Monaco Chamber Orchestra, Nice Orchestra, Orchestre des Pays de la Loire, El Salvador National Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, and presented recitals in numerous cities around the world including New York, Memphis, Chicago, Panama City, San Salvador, London, Paris, and St Petersburg. In addition to his solo career, Mr. Sussmann is also a dedicated chamber musician. He was invited to join the prestigious Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Two program for the 2006-2009 seasons and continues to appear with CMS on tour. He has performed with many of today’s leading artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Menahem Pressler, Joseph Kalichstein, Miriam Fried, Paul Neubauer, Fred Sherry, and Gary Hoffman

Nicholas Canellakis
Cellist Nicholas Canellakis has performed throughout the United States and Europe to critical acclaim. He is a member of the prestigious Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Two, in which he regularly performs in Alice Tully Hall and on tour throughout the country. He is a frequent guest artist at Bargemusic in New York City, and has concertized in venues such as Weill, Zankel, and Merkin Halls, the Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, and Disney Hall. He has performed at the festivals of Santa Fe, Ravinia, [email protected], Mecklenburg, Moab, Sarasota, Verbier, Aspen, and Music from Angel Fire. Mr. Canellakis also appears regularly as part of a duo with pianist/composer Michael Brown, presenting innovative programming including orginal compositions and arrangements. A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Orlando Cole and Peter Wiley, he served as principal cellist of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. He holds a Masters degree from New England Conservatory, where he worked with Paul Katz and was the recipient of the Gregor Piatigorsky Award. Since winning his first concerto competition at the age of 11, Mr. Canellakis has been the recipient of many honors, including First prize in the Musicatri International Competition in Italy and a top prize in the Johansen International Competition in Washington D.C., and was selected to be principal cellist of the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

Michael Boriskin
Michael Boriskin has become recognized on five continents as one of the most imaginative and versatile American pianists of his generation. He has performed throughout the United States and in over 30 countries. His extensive international itinerary includes the San Francisco, Seattle, and Utah Symphonies, New York Chamber Symphony, Polish National and Munich Radio Orchestras, American Composers Orchestra, and UNAM Philharmonic of Mexico City, among many other orchestras. He has performed at many of the world’s foremost concert venues, including Lincoln Center (on its Great Performers Series), the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, BBC in London, South West German Radio, Theatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Vienna’s Arnold Schoenberg Center, Athens Festival of Music and Dance, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Library of Congress, and Istanbul International Festival. His performances, recordings, and commentary figure regularly on National Public Radio, where his innovative broadcast series CENTURYVIEW, celebrating piano works of the past hundred years, was enjoyed for three seasons by over one-million listeners on 200 stations coast-to-coast. Mr. Boriskin is also a much sought-after guest with chamber ensembles worldwide, and has worked with the Borromeo, St. Petersburg, St. Lawrence, Penderecki, Ludwig, and Lark String Quartets, Dorian and Arioso Wind Quintets, and the New York Philharmonic Ensembles.

David Amram
David Amram has composed more than 100 orchestral and chamber music works, written many scores for Broadway theater and film, including the classic scores for the films Splendor in The Grass and The Manchurian Candidate; two operas, including the groundbreaking Holocaust opera The Final Ingredient; and the score for the landmark 1959 documentary Pull My Daisy, narrated by novelist Jack Kerouac. He is also the author of three books, Vibrations, an autobiography, Offbeat: Collaborating With Kerouac, a memoir, and Upbeat: Nine Lives of a Musical Cat published in the fall of 2007 by Paradigm Publishers. A pioneer player of jazz French horn, he is also a virtuoso on piano, numerous flutes and whistles, percussion, and dozens of folkloric instruments from 25 countries, as well as an inventive, funny improvisational lyricist. He has collaborated with Leonard Bernstein, (who chose him as The New York Philharmonic’s first composer-in-residence in 1966), Dizzy Gillespie, Langston Hughes, Dustin Hoffman, Willie Nelson, Thelonious Monk, Odetta, Elia Kazan, Arthur Miller, Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, Johnny Depp and Tito Puente.
